Shrove Tuesday
February 25, 2020

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, celebrated in some Christian countries by consuming pancakes; in others, especially those where it is called Mardi Gras or a translation thereof, it is a carnival day, the last day of "fat eating" or "gorging" before the fasting period of Lent. Wikipedia

Each Shrove Tuesday, the Boy Scouts team up with men of the parish to prepare a wonderful Pancake  Supper.

This year, the Boy Scouts of Troop #279 were joined with Scouts BSA Troop #160, one of first Scouts BSA in the Country for girls.

St. Martin in the Fields Chili Cook off. The results are in!

(text from the 07/17/20 St. Martin's Messenger)

Where can you find a seven-foot tall dinosaur and live bears and tigers? The St. Martin in the Fields Chili Cook-off, of course! Some of the finest chili chefs our parish has to offer competed in a heated contest this past Sunday and ladled up some home cooked goodness. Creative themes were aplenty and spirits were high, especially after a sip of Zombie brew from one of our contestants.

All Saints Sunday

 St Martin in the Fields

November 3, 2019

The Christian celebration of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day stems from a belief that there is a powerful spiritual bond between those in heaven (the "Church triumphant"), and the living (the "Church militant"). In Catholic theology, the day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven. In Methodist theology, All Saints Day revolves around "giving God solemn thanks for the lives and deaths of his saints", including those who are "famous or obscure"
-From Wikipedia

St. Martin's celebrated All Saints Sunday by Baptizing  9 children.
The tradition is to hold baptisms on the closest Sunday to All Saints Day which was Sunday, November 3.

Rite 13 Service

What is Rite 13?

RITE 13, begun as an Episcopal version of the Jewish bar and bat mitzvah ceremony, originated in Durham, N.C., in the mid-1980's at St. Philip's Church. ... ''Rite 13 is a terrific program because when young people have been through Rite 13, they are really ready to confirm their baptismal vows.

''Most 13-year-olds aren't ready to make that kind of commitment'' to religion, she said. ''Rite 13 is a terrific program because when young people have been through Rite 13, they are really ready to confirm their baptismal vows. They know what they are doing.''

St. Martin’s United: Rally Day and Potluck, Sunday, August 25

Rally day will be held during the 9:30 am Christian Formation hour in Pierce Hall. Please come check out all of the ministries and other service opportunities that abound at our parish. Perhaps you would like to volunteer for something new this year? Then, after the 10:30 am worship service, we will gather for fellowship and food at the potluck lunch in Gable Hall. We will also continue to explore the ministry offerings after lunch.

This year, we want to encourage everyone to spend quality time walking through the ministry tables that are in Pierce (and some in the hallway and in Gable Hall, too!). Thank heavens St. Martin's has to spread out their ministries in several locations to accomodate all we have to offer! To aid in our exploration process, the potluck desserts will be available in the back of Pierce Hall. Seek and ye shall find!

The Blessing of the Backpacks

Sunday, August 4, 2019

"Today, we have before us backpacks to be carried to and from school by the children and youth gathered here.

These backpacks will contain work to be done, work that's been returned, books to be studied, tools to complete homework. Notebooks, pencils, pens, protractors, compasses, crayons, rules, scissors, glue sticks and other items used for school work will find their way in and out of these backpacks.

Some days, so much stuff will fill these backpacks that the student may find it difficult to walk. Other days, they will be light and nearly empty. But on each and every day, these backpacks represent work required of the students gathered here. And, as in every aspect of our life, we bring these before God for blessing at this time."
